Sales Tax Calculator
Quickly calculate how much sales tax you'll pay on a purchase and the final total. Just enter the item price, your local tax rate, and quantity to see a clear breakdown.
How it works
Sales tax is a percentage added to the price of goods and services at the point of sale. To find the tax, multiply the pre-tax amount (subtotal) by the tax rate as a decimal.
The formula is: Tax = Subtotal × (Rate ÷ 100), and Total = Subtotal + Tax. For example, a $100 item at a 7.25% rate adds $7.25 in tax for a $107.25 total.
This calculator multiplies your item price by the quantity to get the subtotal, then applies your tax rate to show both the tax amount and final total.
Tips
Combine your state, county, and city rates into one total rate for accuracy — local rates can add several percent on top of the state base.
Some items like groceries, prescriptions, or clothing may be tax-exempt or taxed at a reduced rate depending on where you live, so verify before relying on a single figure.
FAQ
How do I find my sales tax rate?
Check your state's department of revenue website. Your total rate often combines a state rate plus county and city add-ons, so use the rate for the location where the sale occurs.
Is sales tax calculated before or after a discount?
In most U.S. states, sales tax is applied to the price after store discounts and coupons are subtracted, but rules vary. Enter the discounted price to be accurate.
Does this work for any country?
Yes. Although it's labeled sales tax, you can enter any flat consumption tax rate such as VAT or GST to calculate the tax and total.
