How it works

The tip is calculated as a percentage of your bill: Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100). For example, an 18% tip on a $50 bill is $50 × 0.18 = $9.00.

The total is simply the bill plus the tip. To split the cost, the total is divided evenly by the number of people, giving each person's share of both the meal and the gratuity.

Tips

In the U.S., 15–20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service, with 18–20% common for good service. For takeout or counter service, tipping is optional.

If you want a round total, adjust the tip slightly so the final amount lands on an even number — it makes splitting and paying easier.

FAQ

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically standard, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. This calculator applies the percentage to whatever bill amount you enter.

What is a normal tip percentage?

In the U.S., 15% is the lower end, 18% is average, and 20% or more reflects excellent service. Norms vary widely by country and service type.

How is the bill split between people?

The calculator divides the total (bill plus tip) evenly by the number of people. For uneven splits, you can calculate each person's share separately.
